I bought this about a year ago, and have used it often. I like that it's extend-able, but I thought it would allow you to angle it up or down, too, as it pulled out from the wall. It does not. It's a straight pull out, and that is all, though you can push it from side to side, easily. Be sure you locate it on the wall at the height you will use it, as it's not going to angle up and down. The mirror itself will turn all the way around, and it flips over to show either a magnifying mirror, or a plain mirror. The magnification is pretty strong, so you will see every pore, so be ready. If you're half blind, like me, that is good, but it may be too much if you see well. It stays where you put it, and it's really quite nice in quality. I was pleasantly surprised, and overall, I'm quite pleased.

Your skin is a very clever organ. This complex array of cells that every month regenerate and shed, within the constraints of age and the quality of our diet. Our skin is a hard worker and much unappreciated. Often barely nourished despite the money spent on technological promises, we still hope the dream of youth slipping away will be restored.

There is a way to slow the process of aging. But not by applying high tech anti aging creams. By understanding exactly what our skin is, we can find better ways of giving it what it needs. And consequently, we will find ourselves with what we want - more youthful skin.

Our skin is composed of 3 main layers. The outside layer that we apply our anti aging skin care products to is the epidermis. This in turn has 4 to 5 layers, depending on where it is in the body, and whether there is a lot of hair on it. The top layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, serves as a barrier. This is where the cells are continually shedding and where new cells are ultimately pushed up to. These cells have no blood supply, and hence no nutrients or oxygen carried in the blood reach these cells. They are essentially dead in that they cannot engage in the metabolic processes that living cells do. But they do serve very important functions. By creating an impenetrable barrier, they keep out bacteria and other micro organisms, and are thus part of the immune system. But this very function also serves to keep out most of the expensive ingredients in anti aging treatments. And no matter how well an ingredient performs in a laboratory test tube, that does not necessarily translate to reaching the deeper layers of your skin, where the real anti aging work takes place. Most skin care products work only on the stratum corneum, and that is their downfall as anti aging secret agents.

The next layer down from the top is the dermis. This is the layer where wrinkles develop. The dermis consists of living cells, and they are responsible for the structure, integrity and elasticity of the skin. Here collagen is regenerated whilst existing collagen is broken down in the monthly cellular cycle. The production of collagen slows with age and factors like smoking, sun exposure, stress and inadequate nutrition. Other skin nutrients like elastin and hyaluronic acid are found here. Hyaluronic acid for example, helps hold water. As the dermis is composed of living cells, it has a blood supply, which transport nutrients and oxygen to the cells. These capillaries also transport cellular wast like carbon dioxide away. Here you'll also find lymph vessels, sebaceous and sweat glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings for heat and cold.

Fibers from the dermis extend down and into the next main layer, the subcutaneous layer. They anchor the skin to it. The subcutaneous layer in turn attaches to organs like bone and muscles underneath. Here are nerve endings that are sensitive to pressure, blood, lymph vessels, fat cells, collagen and elastin. The subcutaneous layer thins as we age, which creates a more angular appearance.

Moisturizers achieve their temporary effect by trapping water already in the skin. They essentially act as a seal, they do not provide additional water or 'moisture'. The few products that actually work on the deeper layers of the skin are the Retin-A skin care treatments. Vitamin C, though popular, has not conclusively demonstrated that it can reach the deeper layers, the dermis. And even if it did, there is not enough evidence that it actually does anything there.

But the news is not all bad. We can do something, and its not rocket science. If we supply the skin with the nutrients it needs, with good, fresh fruit and vegetables, and good quality fats and protein, or even supplements as a boost. Then, and only then, will we stall the clock at a more agreeable hour.

The party's over and the morning after Christmas brings along the dread of watching your haggard face in the mirror. Hectic partying does that for you -- let's face it. And so we might as well start looking for ways to beat the post party face catastrophe.

WATER YOUR BODY

Your body needs it as much as your plants do! Late nights and alcohol can bring about serious depletion of moisture from your face. Drink as much water as possible throughout the evening. If it is not possible to drink much water during the party, be sure to drink a glass when you come home, before going to bed.

Next morning, over a couple of hours, try to drink a whole bottle (at least 750 ml) of fluids like water, herbal tea (jasmine or chamomile also helps hangovers), lemonade, fresh fruit juices etc. For the rest of the day, keep spritzing your face at regular intervals. With airlines charging a surcharge for each overweight piece of baggage, it might be time to rethink the luggage you're packing. Many of the popular brands have introduced lighter weight luggage and smaller sizes in keeping with these new regulations. Be sure to check with the airline you're using to be sure you are within their restrictions. Even if you have flown with the same airline recently, you may want to verify the regulations. The old sizes of 30" Pullman, 31" Pullman and the 32" Pullman will definitely be over the usual fifty pound limit imposed. Many of the airlines are also restricting the size of the cases you can take. They want nothing larger than 62" linear inches which is the height, plus the width plus the depth. And do we really want the burden of carrying around the old, overweight cases?

A new very popular travel accessory is the portable scale. This also has a handy tape measure, to make sure you haven't overstuffed your bag over the size limit. You can easily check the weight of your baggage, especially if you've bought a lot of souvenirs. My favorite scale has a locking feature so it isn't necessary to lift your packed case all of the way up to your eyes. You lift the case slightly, the scale locks in the amount, and you can comfortably check the pounds.

Before purchasing new luggage, be sure to lift the cases you're interested in. Do not accept the "lightweight" term without checking for yourself. Many cases say "lightweight" but are not as light as others in their class. If the case has a garment bag that you do not use, it's a good idea to remove it. Most of the will zip off, saving you a few pounds. You may also be able to use your current pieces, just downsize by packing smaller pieces. Remember, too, that clothing doesn't weigh all that much. Your bag increases in weight when you pack a lot of shoes, or cosmetics and toiletries.

We used to take all of our toiletries onto the airplane with us. Now, we are restricted to carrying on only a three-one-one case. This is a clear plastic, one quart size bag with containers or bottles and jars of three ounces or less. And this is meant for one per person only! All of the other toiletries need to be packed in your baggage. The best way is to buy the smallest sample sizes of the products you wish to bring along. You can also purchase smaller bottles and pour your cosmetics into these. Be sure to wrap securely, to prevent spillage. I generally plastic wrap each bottle before placing everything in a plastic lined packing cube.

Shoes will also increase the weight of your bag. Try to pack less! There's a new product on the market that lets women take one pair of shoes, with different interchangeable tops. This is a great idea. You can also try to stick one or two color schemes to cut down on the shoes you'll want to bring. Reversible jackets are another great idea for travel. These are extremely lightweight, comfortable, and virtually wrinkle free.

Heavier items can always be sent ahead to your destination. Be sure to check with your hotel, as many of them do have a surcharge for storing items shipped ahead. We never do seem to use everything we pack, so it's important now to be very organized. Plan exactly what you'll need, and don't bring a lot of extra clothing, or travel accessories.You are best off using the "mix and match" approach when packing. Additionally, now that we don't carry on our cosmetics, you may want to carry on your shoes instead. Also, if you bring a hair dryer or small iron, you may want to put those in your carry on luggage. These are items that weigh a little more than clothes, so by carrying them your case will be somewhat lighter.

Although it's not always comfortable, you may want to wear that heavy coat on the airplane. You can take it off and fold it under your seat. It certainly will make your luggage lighter if you don't have to pack heavier items. The same goes for boots or heavy sneakers. If you must have these items along on your trip, wear them on the plane. Think about layers, rather than a lot of bulky heavier items. We have to use a different mindset now when packing. If you want to avoid the surcharges on planes, you just need to lighten your load!
